Do you need to apostille IRS Form 6166?

To obtain IRS Form 6166, which is a “U.S. Residency Certification,” you need to follow these steps:
Complete Form 8802: You must file IRS Form 8802, “Application for United States Residency Certification.” This form requests the IRS to issue Form 6166.
Submit the Application:
- Online: You can apply online through the IRS website. You will need to create an account if you don’t have one.
- Mail: Alternatively, you can mail Form 8802 to the IRS at the address provided in the form instructions.
Pay the User Fee: A non-refundable user fee applies. The fee varies depending on the number of years for which certification is requested and whether you’re an individual or a business entity. Payment can be made via check or money order if filing by mail, or electronically if filing online.
Processing Time: Processing time can take up to 45 days. Ensure you submit the application well in advance of the date you need the certificate.
Receive Form 6166: Once the IRS processes your application and confirms your U.S. residency for tax purposes, they will send you Form 6166. Please contact us once you receive this document.
